On Water Theft and Land Grab
Adil Meléndez
On 24 January we had the honour to host the talk ON WATER THEFT AND LAND GRAB by the Afro Colombian environmental lawyer Adil Meléndez, who will be joined by the Catalan film collective ACATS (Media Collective Association for Social Transformation). Adil Melendez is an environmental and human rights lawyer who lives in Cartagena de Indias, north of Colombia. He mainly works representing afro Colombian peasant communities and Indigenous peoples. Large part of his most recent work is dedicated to the environmental and human rights challenges that the APP Canal del Dique project (the restructuring of 118-kilometre-long water canal in Colombia), the presence of multinational water management companies, the negative impact of palm oil plantations, shrimp farms, intensive cattle breeding, and fossil fuel exploitation. He has been previously awarded with the Shelter City Program of Justice and Peace of the Netherlands and is in London to receive the Sir Henry Brooke Award for Human Rights Defenders by the Members of the Alliance for Lawyers at Risk. Adil was be joined by the Catalan multimedia collective ACATS (Https://acats.cat/), whose work is characterised through cultural disobedience and solidarity as premises. They are now working with Adil in a documentary about his work in the Colombian Caribbean.

Disobedient Children
Dorine Van Meel
On 14 February we had the honour to host the talk DISOBEDIENT CHILDREN by Dorine Van Meel, Dutch artist whose practice takes the form of video installations, performances, discursive projects and long-term collaborations and course director of the MA Planetary Poetics at Sandberg Institute, Amsterdam. Dorine will share fragments of her artistic practice and focus on the role of discursive and collaborative work. She will discuss Planetary Poetics as a project that aims to challenge us to think beyond the classroom and commit to a reinvention of the world. All welcome!
