Sounding The Climate: Unveiling Voices in Climate Justice

Curated and facilitated by MA Architecture students as a 'Making Things Social' this event was held at the Lethaby Gallery, Granary Square, to amplify often muted and underrepresented voices in matters of the climate, land and ecology. It was a moment to amplify and give light to practitioners of color through sound exploration and relaxed discussion in turn, the focus was pointed on community perspectives and the dialogues of the climate were emotion and people led, specifically drawing on the stories of people from the diaspora.

Sounding: the Climate, Part Two

In dialogue with Miriam Hillawi Abraham

Part two of Sounding the Climate was curated as a two-part virtual dialogue with spatial practitioners and artists to further explore diverse pathways to climate justice. Miriam Hillawi Abraham, a multidisciplinary designer from Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) with a background in architecture, shared her work in digital media and spatial design, using her practice to interrogate themes of equitable futurism and intersectionality.

In dialogue with Margarida Waco and Catalina Mejía Moreno

The second virtual dialogue explored cross-cultural architectural practice through the lenses of identity, resistance, and spatial justice, featuring academics and spatial practitioners Catalina Mejia Moreno and Margarida Waco. Both emphasized the importance of individualism, cultural heritage, beauty, and memory. This two-part series was shared with the spatial practice courses and the wider public.

Catalina Mejia Moreno is a sea swimmer, spatial practitioner, writer, educator and researcher. She is interested in practices of resistance, environmental, racial and spatial justice, as well as ecofeminist practice and thought. Through creative practice, activism and critique, she imagines tangible pathways for social and ecological restorations and imaginations.

Margarida Waco originally hails from Cabinda, having lived between geographies spanning from DR. Congo, the Republic of the Congo, France, and Denmark. Her practice mobilises architecture, ecology, and politics through design, curation, research, and writing. Her work has been presented internationally, including at the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale, Palais de Tokyo, and the Royal Danish Academy.

[SOUNDING:]² was held at the Lethaby Gallery by the sounding: collective to explore interdependence through sound during the Observatory Exhibition, part of the London Design Festival. Our friends Jess Rowley, Pedro Resendez, Töpia, Kwaku Boachie, Arman Nouri of Solfi, and Shortwave Collective shared their practices with Central Saint Martins students, staff, and the wider public—platforming multidisciplinary artists who use sound as a medium for occupation, education, and amplification.
