Climate Audit: what is and what might be is an initiative led by Andreas Lang, Catalina Mejia Moreno, Mariam Aslam and Gabriele Pauryte conceived and produced in collaboration between MArch and Climate Forum and supported by the Climate Action Manager at UAL (Niamh Tuft).
Climate Audit: what is and what might be seeks to understand how climate is being addressed across the courses in the Spatial Practices Programme. With the necessity to centre climate, spatial, social and racial justice within architecture and spatial practices curricula, the audit looks how this is currently addressed through taught content, staff teaching practices and within student work.
Numerous climate frameworks relevant to the built environment including RIBA, UN Sustainable Development Goals, Principles for Environmental Justice, were studied to create a constellation of climate action. The learning from this research informed a reflective tool and a participatory workshop which helps staff and students to reflect on their position within the extended field of climate action. The tools also prompt individuals to create a pledge to climate action in their future practices. Tools were produced in collaboration with Marcos Villalba from Villalba Studio.
Through these workshops we engage critical reflection, open conversations about confidence around climate curriculum. The audit suggests recommendations and support systems to facilitate a holistic, embedded and through engagement with climate across Spatial Practices courses.
