ZERO صفر is a 24-hr online broadcast and podcast exploring what might, should, and could get counted in order to address climate change as a planetary phenomenon. Many creative fields address maths and science as forms of reduction or violence, but the tools of counting, data and measurement are more critical than ever to contend with the crises we face. Through conversation, sound, and music, Zero explores the role of calculation and computation in developing a plan for surviving the contemporary climate crisis. The project is funded by The British Council as part of its Egypt-UK Climate Change grants programme.
ZERO focuses on the next generations of the future in the conversation at COP27, which is typically dominated by adult leaders. Student leaders will address decarbonisation and urban resilience approaches by universities, communities, governments and businesses, across architecture and urban landscapes.
The show was hosted from both Cairo and London, and broadcast in Arabic, English, and Spanish. The broadcast was led by Spatial Radio in collaboration with Radio Espacio Estacion, a nomadic online translingual station. The show launched a new channel at Ain Shams University, sharing the tools of dialogue, listening, and radio technologies with local students and youth.
